About Us The JWL Foundation was established in memory of our 8-month-old son, James William Lazzaro who died from an undiagnosed genetic metabolism disorder called VLCAD. VLCAD is short for Very Long Chain Acyl Co-A Dehyrdrogenase Deficiency and, together with over 30 other Genetic Metabolism Disorders such as MCAD, LCAD, and SCHAD, it is estimated that over 500 babies die needlessly from these treatable diseases every year in the U.S. These disorders have a higher incident rate (1/5,600) than such commonly tested disorders as PKU (1/10,000), Galactosemia (1/80,000), and Maple Syrup Urine Disease (1/120,000), and yet most states do not offer supplemental screening for genetic metabolism disorders...
